Shipyard American Pale Ale

This bottle looks familiar, and I have a feeling that I might have drunk it before. Of course I have no idea what it is like because I have the memory of a goldfish.

Details

From the website:

Dry hopped with real American hop varieties that deliver a refreshing, easy drinking true American Pale Ale. Take a moment to enjoy!

Shipyard American Pale Ale is a versatile beer style that actually makes a perfect partner to most meals. Citrus flavours work perfectly to complement rich grilled or BBQ meats, spiced foods, fajitas or chilli’s and also some bold cheeses too. The fruity character also means that our American Pale Ale is equally at home paring with more delicate flavour seafoods like Lobster or crab.

Expectations

The description makes it sound quite hoppy. I'm just hoping for something tasty and refreshing on a typical rainy December evening.

Experience

The dark brown bottle didn't give much away, but the beer is a nice pale yellow with a thin but steady head and plenty of bubbles. The smell is quite sweet, hoppy and with an indistinct citrus tang. It actually reminds me of a lemon-scented detergent.

The taste is good - bitter, quite strong, a bit hoppy but not really citrus-heavy. I'm struggling to describe the taste, and the only thing I can come up with is "metallic", which doesn't sound as good as this tastes. It's very smooth too, so maybe a polished metal. I have no idea where I am going with this.

Anyway, what I wanted was a refreshing beer and this did the job nicely.

Verdict

4/5 : Tasty, and it's a stronger taste than I had expected.
